Who Killed "Sweet Guy" Ernie Reno
November 07, 2021

STATUS: OPEN
Knoxville Police responded to a report of gun fire around 8 pm on November 11, 2011 after receiving a call from a resident living along Selma Avenue. After looking around the area not discovering anything suspicious or hearing any gun fire they returned to patrolling Knoxville.

Then just after midnight on November 12th another call was received. This time it is was from a resident on Selma who discovered her neighbor Robert “Ernie” Reno lying in her yard face down after having been shot. Ernie was just eight-days shy of his 41st birthday. Almost 10-years later and Knoxville Police Investigators are asking again, for anyone with any information to come forward.

Ernie grew up in Strawberry Plains and did masonry work for a living before retiring due to disabilities sustained five years earlier. He lived across from his Aunt in Knoxville and would stop over frequently for a visit and is described by all who knew him to be a “sweet guy,” “a good friend,” “wouldn’t hurt a fly.” They are all left to wonder who did this to him and why.

Ernie had been seen by friends earlier in the evening of Nov. 11th at a market on Holston Drive and rode his bicycle from there to a friend’s house before going home. His bicycle was found at his home, but for some unknown reason he left his home, dropped off his purchases from the market and left on foot. It appears he walked up Ault Street to Selma, then walked back down Selma before being shot.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about where Ernie may have gone that night after returning home, who he may have seen, or what happened to him to contact East TN Valley Crime Stoppers online at www.easttnvalleycrimestoppers.org or via the P3 TIPS app. To learn more about Ernie's case watch KPD's re-enactment video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EkYKg5jggg&t=3s
